The Experience

Portal is an immersive performance meets magical scavenger hunt set to unfold in downtown Boone where participants are given clues that lead them along a secret path with many surprises and performances along the way. In the end, some will make a stunning discovery that unlocks the final experience.

Groups of 6 gather at the launchpad on King St in Boone (exact location TBA at time of ticket purchase) and are given a unique set of clues.

Participants are brought through various historic and important landmarks on their way to discovering that the Portal was not at all what they expected. Depending on which type of ticket is purchased, the participant will either be left to figure it out mostly on their own - or guided 100% of the way.

If found, the ultimate discovery sends them into an even deeper adventure, meeting a mysterious group of beings who claim to be from the future and have an important message to deliver to mankind - before it’s too late.

Equal parts sci-fi, adventure, and mystery, Portal brings together the most riveting aspects of immersive theater, dance, and storytelling to form a very unique, adventurous, and joyful exploration of Boone - all while posing important and relevant questions in a world deeply divided and in need of remembering our unity and togetherness.

Not all will complete the journey, but for those that do, the Luminaries Party - a remarkable finale - await them. Tickets to the party may also be purchased separately. Here one last tantalizing clue could potentially unlock many secrets, revealing an entirely different reality and way of life for those able to see it.

Production of Portal is being led by Ashe county native and award-winning producer Stephen Shelley named one of the 100 Most Influential Brooklyn Artists as the founder of the BEAT Festival. Shelley is celebrated for his two-decades-long producing career in NYC, which includes apprenticing for the leading modern dancer of the 20th century, Merce Cunnigham.

The event is co-produced by Punchdrunk veteran and world-renowned musician, singer, and choreographer, Bryony Perkins.

The Premise

A rare tome of essays attributed to Pythagoras named The Portal of Pythagoras was stolen from an important collection in Baltimore, Maryland over 70 years ago. Many assume this precious item of antiquity is gone forever though some believe it was smuggled down the east coast. A local historian and collector, J. Bradley Blevins, thinks it may be located near Boone, NC which matches a potential smuggling route from the original collector's home.

Could this be true? Could there be a rare and historic book hidden somewhere in our beloved Blue Ridge Mountains?

Recently, J. Blevins, a retired antiquities professor currently residing in Banner Elk, began receiving strange messages hinting that the ancient book, The Portal of Pythagoras, might be surfacing in the region, including an odd sequence of clues that are equal parts baffling and enticing.

Blevins may be on the precipice of profound discovery. One, he believes, could shift the entire trajectory of mankind. However, he will need help locating the item given his physical disabilities. A special mission is being organized to find it.

This opens the storyline of Portal, an experience inviting individuals and groups to come together for an immersive performance art meets scavenger hunt along the streets of downtown Boone, NC this fall.
